OIP expresses appreciation for Thierry Breton's committed work at the European Commission

And calls for further regulation of the digital giants, while respecting our laws and fair competition

The Open Internet Project (OIP) expresses its appreciation for the work carried out by Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market, who is stepping down after years of commitment to a strong, sovereign and resilient digital Europe. Under his tenure, major advances have been made in the European Union’s digital transformation, paving the way for a more secure ecosystem that respects fair competition, especially through stricter rules for major platforms and greater protection for European citizens and their data.

With the adoption of the Digital Service Act (DSA) and the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in particular, Europe has positioned itself as a pioneer in digital regulation, guaranteeing better user protection, transparency of algorithms, and accountability of major technology companies in favor of a fair competition.

Nevertheless, while these victories are indisputable, the battle for a sovereign digital future is far from over.

In this light, the OIP calls on the European institutions and future leaders of the strategic digital portfolio to relentlessly pursue the fight for European digital sovereignty.

The Open Internet Project is therefore inviting Stéphane Séjourné to a meeting as soon as he has been confirmed as Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, to discuss the role of public procurement in the structuring of the European digital economy, and precautionary measures against abuse of dominant positions.
